Welcome!

Our purpose in Washington County is to promote literacy by providing free individualized reading and writing instruction to non-readers and low-level readers, and promoting conversational skills to the non-English speaking community.


TUTOR TRAINING WORKSHOPS

Would you like to help someone who is struggling to read?

How about boosting someone's confidence by helping them learn to speak English?

To become one of our Certified Volunteer Tutors, you need to attend one (either Frederick or Hagerstown) of the following 2-day Workshops.  Attending both days is required to receive your certificate.

HAGERSTOWN -- held at Benevola Utd Methodist Church, 19925 Benevola Church Rd, Boonsboro MD (9am - 3:30pm)

  • Feb 10 & Feb 17

  • Sept 29 & Oct 6

FREDERICK (held at  Frederick Co Literacy Council, 110 E Patrick St (9am - 3:30pm).  Requires you to attend an Orientation session and register on their website (https://www.frederickliteracy.org/)

  • Jan 6 & Jan 13

  • Sept 15 & Sept 22

When you're ready to get started, just follow these easy steps:

  1. Go to our HOME page, click on ABOUT US, then click on FAQs.

  2. Read the Orientation document before attending the Workshop.  This document will answer many of your questions.  Feel free to email or call our office (301-739-4208) with any questions/concerns..  

  3. When you're ready to register for our 2-day Tutor Training Workshop, click the TUTORS tab at the top of our website.  

  4. Click on BECOMING A TUTOR.

  5. Register at the bottom of the page (please NOTE that the dates on the registration form are wrong; we are trying to correct this problem.).

Who We Are

Tutors 

The Literacy Council Tutor is a patient and caring volunteer who wants to help other adults improve their reading skills. If you can read and want to help others to learn, you can be a Tutor!

Students

We currently have approximately 20 students in our Basic Literacy program and 18 in our ESL program. Here’s where you can learn how to become a student with us.
